Pour these pale-orange Halloween smoothies into clear serving beakers and perch a purple gummy worm over each rim. The fruit gives the drink its color, and the blueberry skins give the worms their dark berry flecks. Set out the two cold beakers as mad-scientist experiments, ready to drink.
This version brings together the Orange Coconut Milk Smoothie and Blueberry Lime Gummy Worms. Make the worms ahead so they are fully set before you blend the drink.
Have the coconut milk and gummy worms ready
The smoothie uses finished thick homemade coconut milk, a small orange, half a ripe banana, one raw egg yolk and ice. Follow its linked recipe for the exact amounts and blending method. The banana should have brown spots on its skin, and the orange should be peeled and free of seeds.
One batch makes two servings. Keep the raw-yolk ingredient in mind when choosing this smoothie; the Halloween presentation uses that complete recipe. Homemade coconut milk is prepared before the five-minute drink begins.
The gummy recipe needs time in the refrigerator. Choose two small worms that are firm enough to release cleanly from their molds. Return the rest of the batch to its covered refrigerator container.
Serve the worms with a little natural, non-hydrogenated coconut oil, as their recipe directs for added fat with cooked fruit. Keep that serving step even though the smoothie also contains coconut milk. Use the amount of oil you enjoy with your portion.
Choose the serving glasses
Use two food-safe serving beakers or clear drinking glasses, with enough room above the smoothie for a worm to rest at the rim. Wide openings make the garnish easier to place. Set the glasses on a stable surface before pouring.
A plain clear glass gives the same view of the creamy orange drink. If you use beakers with measurement marks, leave those marks visible for the mad-scientist look.
Blend, pour and add the worms
Make the orange smoothie using its own five-ingredient recipe. Blend until the fruit and ice are fully broken down and the color is even. The result should be pale orange and pourable, with a little froth on top.
Divide the batch evenly between the two glasses. Lightly coat the two serving worms with coconut oil, then set one over each rim with part of its body resting inside the drink. Keep the rest of the rim clear so the glass is comfortable to drink from.
Serve right away while the smoothie is cold and the fine bubbles are still visible. Leave the remaining worms chilled for another snack. The blended drink loses its froth and becomes thinner as the ice melts.
Where this fits on GAPS
This is for Full GAPS after raw fruit, coconut, raw egg yolk and the gummy ingredients have been introduced and tolerated. Serve it as a fruit snack between meals. Follow both linked recipes, including their instructions for a brown-spotted banana, homemade coconut milk and plain gelling beef gelatin.
If you start directly on Full GAPS, keep fruit and baking out for a few weeks, then introduce them slowly while watching your symptoms. Wait to introduce raw fruit until stools are consistently normal. If you have diarrhea or abdominal pain, avoid fruit initially.
The orange smoothie contains a raw egg yolk. Use eggs from a source you trust. The gummies contain beef gelatin, so this version contains egg and animal gelatin. Using coconut oil with the worms keeps the serving dairy-free.
Other variations
Clear glasses: Use ordinary drinking glasses for the same orange smoothie and worm garnish. Keep the portions the same and choose glasses with room at the top.
A separate pink-coral smoothie: For another fruit combination, follow the Tropical Berry Smoothie With Pineapple and Ginger. It has its own ingredients and method. Prepare it from that recipe rather than adding its fruit and ginger to this orange batch.
Preparing ahead
Make the coconut milk and gummies ahead using their own directions. Keep the gummies covered in the refrigerator, where their recipe allows up to five days. Blend the smoothie close to serving and add only the worms you plan to eat.
Prepare the two-glass batch for immediate serving. If you pause briefly after pouring, stir the drink before adding the garnish so the coconut milk and fruit come back together.
Questions before you start
Do the gummy worms go in the blender?
Keep them whole for the topping. Blend the orange smoothie first, pour it into the glasses, then add one prepared worm to each serving.
How many drinks does this make?
One batch of the linked orange smoothie makes two drinks. At 2×, make two batches of that smoothie and use four small gummy worms for four servings.
How long should I allow?
Allow about five minutes when the coconut milk and set gummies are ready. Making the milk and the gummy batch takes additional preparation and chilling time.
