Three of our six children have had eczema, and none of their timelines has looked the same. One child had eczema long before we found GAPS. Another developed it for the first time almost two years after we started. Our youngest developed it as a baby in September 2026, right before we began Baby GAPS with him.

That is why I do not give families one neat clearing timeline. I can show you exactly what happened in our house, what changed at the same time, and which parts we still cannot separate.

How I Label the Children in Our Story

I refer to our children by their age when our family started GAPS in July 2024. That keeps their privacy intact and keeps the timeline clear. Our almost-2-year-old was the fourth child. Our 3-year-old was the third child. Our youngest was born after we started GAPS.

Our Almost-2-Year-Old: Eczema Before GAPS

She was born September 6, 2022. Her eczema began around six months old, in March 2023, more than a year before we started GAPS. By July 2024, it was one of the reasons we were ready to change how the whole family ate.

We started the GAPS Introduction Diet as a family. Her eczema cleared about six weeks into Intro. Those first six weeks were rough. The itching and discomfort became part of the die-off period we were trying to understand, and we stopped baths during the worst stretch because her skin did better without them. We brought baths back after week six.

She also gave us one of our clearest food-form lessons. Raw apples and fresh apple juice caused a reaction. Homemade applesauce did not. I cannot give you a tidy biochemical explanation from our family notes. I can tell you that raw, juiced, and cooked were not interchangeable for her.

Our 3-Year-Old: First Eczema at Four

Our 3-year-old at the GAPS start had the first eczema of her life during the week of March 1, 2026, when our sixth child was born. She was four at the time and turned five later that month.

The sequence is simple. She spent a few days with a grandparent while I gave birth, and the eczema appeared within days. It covered her feet, fingers, legs, arms, and face. We do not know what caused the new onset, and I will not fill that gap with a guess about what happened during the visit.

We used topical steroids and assorted creams. We changed the laundry products, stopped fabric softener, rewashed the clothes and sheets, and continued Full GAPS with a few meals out. Her skin cleared over five to six months.

Several things changed at the same time. I cannot honestly pull one piece out and call it the reason she cleared. What I can say is that this was a first-ever episode, it began at four, and it resolved on that five-to-six-month timeline.

Our Youngest: Eczema Before Baby GAPS

Our youngest was born March 1, 2026. He developed eczema on his back at six months old, in September 2026. We started Baby GAPS with him on Sunday, September 20, 2026.

That story is still unfolding. There is no clearing result or finished timeline to report. I would rather leave the outcome blank than rush ahead of what we have actually seen.

Patterns We Have Noticed Around Flares

Commercial processed food has lined up with eczema flares when our family drifts too far from the diet. Teething has also coincided with flares. Those patterns are useful because they tell us what to record. They do not turn one event into proof of cause.

With our almost-2-year-old, we also saw a repeating order: eczema would flare, signs of constipation would follow, and her behavior became much harder to manage. Once she passed the stool, the other symptoms eased. That cycle helped us see why treating the rash alone never felt like the whole answer.

How the GAPS Book Frames Eczema

In Gut and Physiology Syndrome, Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride calls eczema and many other rashes GAPS conditions. She connects them with abnormal gut flora, a porous gut wall, food reactions, toxins leaving through the skin, the skin’s microbial community, and the inflammation the immune system creates while handling the damage.[1]

The long-term work in that framework is the GAPS Nutritional Protocol. The skin measures in the book are there to soothe and support the skin while the gut work continues. Read Eczema and the GAPS Diet: Complete Food and Skin Guide for the diet routes, food choices, dairy note, baths, moisturizers, honey and seaweed applications, and superfine wool research.

What Our Three Timelines Taught Me

  • Eczema can begin before GAPS, well into GAPS, or before a Baby GAPS start.
  • Six weeks was one child’s timeline. Five to six months was another child’s timeline.
  • A diet change, laundry change, topical treatment, and time may overlap.
  • Raw, juiced, and cooked forms of the same food can produce different family observations.
  • An unfinished story needs to stay unfinished until there is an outcome to report.

Track the Pattern Before Memory Blurs It

The Eczema Skin Tracker gives you one place for dates, food forms, stool changes, skin-contact changes, teething, baths, and what happened next.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Long Did Eczema Take to Clear in Your House?

About six weeks into Intro for our almost-2-year-old, and five to six months for our 3-year-old at the GAPS start. Our youngest has no finished outcome yet.

Did All Three Children Have Eczema Before GAPS?

No. Only our almost-2-year-old had eczema before our July 2024 start. Our 3-year-old developed it for the first time in March 2026. Our youngest developed it in September 2026.

Did the Laundry Change Clear the 2026 Eczema?

The laundry change happened during the same five-to-six-month period as Full GAPS and topical care. The timing is real. A single cause is not established.

Did Your Youngest Start Baby GAPS?

Yes. We started on Sunday, September 20, 2026. The earlier October date was our plan before we began and is no longer current.

Your Next Step

Write down when the eczema began, what else changed in the same week, and the exact pattern around food, stool, baths, laundry, teething, and skin care. Then use the complete eczema guide to choose the GAPS route that fits the rest of the person’s digestive picture.
