Aalgo is the seaweed powder I use in my family’s GAPS baths. Seaweed baths were one of the home changes that made the biggest difference for us, alongside changes to laundry products and homemade skin care. The children enjoyed them because they smelled like the ocean.
Baths have a place in GAPS beyond getting washed. In Gut and Physiology Syndrome, Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride recommends therapeutic bedtime baths to assist toxin elimination and help the body relax before sleep. Seaweed powder is one of the ingredients she lists. That is the reason for looking at a bath ingredient here, with Aalgo as the particular seaweed powder I use.[3]
For someone who wants a plain seaweed powder to add to bathwater, Aalgo is a useful option to consider. Its appeal is the simple ingredient and the flexible powder format. You measure what you need for a particular use, mix it with water and rinse the bath afterward. The seaweed smell and that extra cleanup are part of the choice, too.[1][4]
Why Aalgo Became Part of Our Baths
Our bath routine had a pause before Aalgo became part of it. During the hardest first six weeks of the GAPS Introduction Diet, I stopped baths and observed that our child’s eczema healed better during that time. When baths came back after week six, we alternated Aalgo seaweed baths with the options described in Gut and Psychology Syndrome and Gut and Physiology Syndrome.
The children had missed baths. When we brought them back, the ocean smell gave the seaweed ones something they enjoyed. They were fine with the other bath options as well.
I explain the pause and the return to baths in my family’s bath-routine article. That pause was our decision during a difficult stretch. In the book, Dr. Natasha recommends a daily bedtime bath.[3]
What Is in Aalgo?
The current product is called Aalgo Organic Atlantic Seaweed Skincare. It is a powder made from organic Atlantic seaweed. The GAPS shop describes hand-harvested wild seaweed from Ireland, with nothing added or taken away.[1][4]
The powder format matters in practice. You add water when you use it, so you can prepare a bath or a smaller soak without keeping separate ready-mixed products for each. Aalgo also sells soap and shampoo bars, but those are separate products. This review is about the seaweed powder that goes into our baths.[1][2]
Preparing an Aalgo Bath
Aalgo’s current general directions for an adult bath use two tablespoons in lukewarm water, followed by a twenty-minute soak and gentle patting dry.[2]
GAPS introduces baths more gradually. In the 2020 book, Dr. Natasha begins with about a tablespoon of the chosen bath ingredient, cooler water and only a few minutes. The amount, warmth and time then change according to the person’s response.[3] You do not need to begin with the longest soak on a product page. For the full GAPS starting guidance, read the bath-routine guide.
For the practical work around the bath:
- Have the powder, a measuring spoon and your towel ready before running the bath.
- Add the measured powder to lukewarm water, following the directions for your product and the gradual starting approach above.
- After the bath, gently pat the skin dry.
- Rinse the tub promptly to remove seaweed residue, as the GAPS shop directs.
Preparing the water is only part of the job. Allowing time to rinse the tub afterward makes the routine easier to repeat, particularly when another person needs the bathroom next.[2][4]
A Foot Soak
The manufacturer also gives a foot-soak method: one tablespoon in a basin of warm water, with the feet covered, for fifteen minutes, then patting dry.[2] That gives the powder another practical use for someone who has no bathtub or wants to prepare a smaller basin. Our family experience described here is with the baths.
The Smell, Cleanup and Bag Size
The ocean smell was a positive part of our experience because the children enjoyed it. If you are choosing Aalgo for your own bath, take that natural seaweed smell into account. A pleasant smell for one person may be something another person would rather keep out of their bath.
The other everyday consideration is cleanup. The GAPS shop specifically says to rinse the bath immediately to remove residue.[4] I would include that in the purchase decision. A powder that suits your ingredient preferences still needs to fit the time and bathroom arrangements you have.
The maker currently offers 150-gram, 600-gram and one-kilogram bags, plus a two-bag one-kilogram option. It describes the smallest size as an introduction for body use or for facials, and the larger sizes for more regular use.[1] Choose around how often you expect to use the powder. I would not treat an advertised number of baths as a fixed result, since the amount used and the kind of soak both matter.
For US readers, the GAPS shop lists the one-kilogram Aalgo seaweed bath powder. The manufacturer’s product page shows its current size choices. These are useful places to compare the actual powder and package you want.
Aalgo and GAPS
Seaweed powder is one of the bath options in the “Daily Baths at Bedtime” section of Gut and Physiology Syndrome. Dr. Natasha also lists Epsom salt, cider vinegar, natural salt and baking soda (bicarbonate of soda). Her starting instructions are deliberately gradual, with one chosen ingredient in the water.[3]
For more of the story around our skin changes, read our family eczema account. My review of Gut and Physiology Syndrome explains the wider program that the bath chapter belongs to.
Is Aalgo Worth Choosing?
Aalgo makes sense if you want a single-ingredient seaweed powder, enjoy or are comfortable with its ocean smell, and have a place for baths or smaller soaks in your routine. Its different uses and bag sizes let you choose around the amount of bathing you expect to do.
If that is the kind of bath product you are looking for, take a closer look at Aalgo in the GAPS shop.
